Zombie Jesus Nativity Scene Leaves God 'Frowning'

God is “frowning” on a nativity scene in Cincinnati, Ohio, according to Christian protesters flustered at the contents of an unusual festive display. Jasen Dixon, the manager of the local “13 Rooms of Doom,” created a life-sized zombie nativity scene replete with undead baby Jesus nestled in a hay trough, serenaded by a ghostly cover of 'Silent Night.'

According to 'The New York Times,' this is the second year Dixon has presented Christ’s birth as a vignette of the living dead. Last year he was ordered to take it down. This year he applied for a permit, only to be refused as it contravened a local zoning laws. Undeterred, Dixon built it anyway, risking a $500 a day fine from Sycamore town officials, as well as stirring the ire of the local faithful.

Writing on his Facebook page on Friday, Dixon said: “We were going to take it down, decided to leave it up, all the lights are re-hooked and open for business just no roof. Let’s see what happens.” Speaking to a local TV news channel over the weekend, Dixon explained: “I got all the paperwork and how it was wrote out, and it says as long as it’s not over 200-square foot that I can have it without a permit, and it’s about 65-square foot."

When asked what exactly local authorities might not like about a life-sized display featuring a cross-legged, razor-toothed zombie Jesus surrounded by undead wise men bent on flesh, Dixon said: “I think it’s the theme. It just rubs people the wrong way. That’s why they’re coming down so hard on me.”

The owner, who is currently asking for donations to help cover the costs of any fines, insists his neighbours are fine with the scene. God, however, is perturbed, his followers protesting the Yuletide exhibit by handing out pamphlets.

“GOD FROWNS UPON THIS MANGER SCENE,” the literature screamed, noting: "Jesus has supreme power over death and evil; he is not a zombie.”

Christ did, however, rise from the dead… so prepare for the apocalypse.

A Few Surprising Foods That Actually Have More Sugar Than A Krispy Kreme Donut

The phrase "sugary foods" probably brings a few things to mind: junk food, chocolate bars, donuts, and soft drinks. What you probably don't think of are snacks that are generally accepted as "healthy" alternatives. Take Part wanted to illustrate just how sugary some normal foods are, so they compared their sugar content to that of a Krispy Kreme donut. The results were pretty shocking. I'm going to start eating grilled cheese and donuts. Take Part Using this dressing on salads seems like a terrible idea. Take Part I guess no one thought Fruit Loops were a good idea. Take Part...

If You Want To Spend Hundreds On A Gift That'll Ruin Your Child's Life, This Is It

If you ask thousands of teens around the world, YAL (or young-adult literature, for those of you who aren't in the know) is where it's at. One of the biggest YAL successes of all time is the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer, which has inspired crazy amounts of art and (deeply disturbing) fanfiction in the years since its publication. But this Twilight-inspired endeavor probably isn't what Meyer had in mind when she sent her famous story out into the world -- especially because someone out there will probably give one of these as a gift to their unsuspecting child this holiday...

Storm Desmond's Destruction Captured In Astonishing Aerial Footage Of Carlisle

The devastation left in the wake of Storm Desmond has been captured in an astonishing set of aerial footage.

The drone footage, from Helipromo, reveals the waterlogged countryside around Carlisle, including fields, schools, homes and the town’s civic centre.

The video was released to help raise funds for those affected by the floods.

The country has been badly hit by the storm, which has left at least one person dead.

An underwater search team is recovering a body found in Kendal in Cumbria after reports that an elderly man had fallen into the River Kent on Sunday morning, the Press Association reported.

More than 2,000 homes and businesses in the county were flooded and almost 60,000 homes were left without power throughout Sunday as the floods damaged substations and caused electrical faults.

Electricity North West said about 2,600 properties in Cumbria remained without power on Monday morning because of 11 separate faults caused by flooding.

In Carlisle, the Army was sent to help support emergency services evacuating people from their homes in streets where cars were almost entirely submerged.

Cumbria County Council leader Stewart Young has called for an investigation into the county's flood defences after £45 million was invested since catastrophic floods in 2005.

He told the BBC Radio 4 Today programme: "I will be talking to our local MPs later today and if the Environment Agency needs to revisit them then that's what's going to have to happen, because we can't continue to have events like this in Cumbria, we just won't be able to cope."

Around 40 schools remained closed, while the disruption led to the cancellation of appointments and routine business across NHS hospitals and services.

Environment Secretary Liz Truss will set out more details of the response from the government, which has already committed to a £2.3 billion programme of flood defences over six years, in a statement to the House of Commons on Monday afternoon.

The government has also said that it will look again" at flood defences following the devastation caused by Storm Desmond as thousands of homes were damaged and a body was discovered in a swollen river.

David Cameron visited Carlisle where he met with a resident whose home was devastated by the flooding, as well as thanking the emergency services for their hard work.

Man Who Tries To Return Woman's Cash Is Reportedly Told: 'I'm Not Into Black Boys'

A Good Samaritan who tried to return a stranger's money she had dropped on the floor was reportedly told: "Sorry – I'm not into black boys."

Joe Christie said he was going to buy some food when he saw £10 fall from a woman's pocket on Streatham High Road on Saturday.

He said that after he saw the money fall from the woman's pocket, he ran up to her holding the note and she cut him off with the "racist" comment.

Following the unpleasant encounter, Christie decided to treat himself to food, courtesy of the presumptuous woman.

He posted a picture - along with a handful of change - to Facebook to explain what had happened.

The post has been shared more than 6,000 times and received more than 127,000 'likes'.

Christie said that he chased after the woman, shouting to her "excuse me". Before he could say anything else, she responded: "Sorry, I'm not into black boys", and walked off.

He said that he did not make a scene, but went to buy some food instead.

Speaking to the Evening Standard, the aspiring singer said: "It's not the worst she could have said in terms of the racist aspect of it, adding: "But it was disappointing, because in this day and age you wouldn't expect it in London. She could have just said 'I'm in a hurry'.

"She was flattering herself to say the least, though. She wasn't a hottie, put it that way."

Charles Bronson Raises Money For Disabled Man, Bradley Hannan, Who Was Attacked At A Bus Stop

Britain's most notorious criminal, Charles Bronson, has raised money for a disabled man who was beaten up and mugged at a bus stop.

The 62-year-old inmate has been the instigator of a number of attacks on prisoners and guards.

But he was touched by the violence directed at Bradley Hannan, a 29-year-old man who has battled several brain tumors and weighs just six stone.

Hannan was punched in the head and had his wallet and mobile phone stolen during the attack, which happened on November 18 in Medway, Kent.

When he heard of the attack, Bronson, who is now calling himself Charles Salvador, sold a piece of his artwork in an online auction and donated the profits to Hannan.

The artwork sold for £430 and Bronson included a message to Hannan, KentOnline reports.

Bronson said: "A nice few quid for you to have a great Crimbo. Don't allow them worms to change your life.

"Get back out there and show them worms they can never beat you. Your [sic] well respected and have many supporters and a smashing family."

Speaking of the attacker, Bronson added: "Brave picking on him eh? Six stone. It's a sick old world out there.

"Them worms will get there [sic] just deserts. See how they like it. Who knows, they may end up next to me.

"How nice that would be."

Many people were shocked to hear of the brutal assault on Hannan while he waited for a bus on his way home from volunteering at hospital.

A GoFundMe fundraising page was set up for Hannan following the attack. So far, more than £3,500 has been raised.

A message posted on the fundraising page reads: "A disabled man was attacked by thug in Chatham, Luton road on 18/11/15, his money and phone was stolen but not only that he was punched by these sick people that caused this to him.

"This story has touched my heart, I do not know the family or Bradley but hope this provides some reassurance that there is good people in the world including him."

This is not the first time that the notorious criminal has shown his charitable side.

Last month, Bronson sent a 'get well' card to a five-month-old girl battling a congenital heart condition after her father requested a message "from one fighter to another".

In July, Bronson sent Alton Tower's crash victim, Leah Washington a handmade card that featured a smiling dragon with the words "It’s nice to be nice." A message from the inmate read: "Leah, hope you get well soon, x ."

Labour Chief Whip Rosie Winterton Backed By Parliamentary Labour Party In Wake Of 'Revenge Reshuffle' Claims

Labour MPs have given their strong backing to Shadow Chief Whip Rosie Winterton following speculation that she could be axed in a ‘revenge reshuffle’ by Jeremy Corbyn.

At its weekly meeting, the Parliamentary Labour Party loudly applauded Ms Winterton as she declared that ‘there should be no political consequences’ for any MP in the wake of the highly-divisive Commons vote on Syria last week.

Jeremy Corbyn -- who has faced stormy PLPs in recent weeks - was not present at the meeting, as he was still in Paris for a trade union meeting on the climate change summit.

However, the strong show of support for the Shadow Chief whip was interpreted by as a warning to the leadership not to move her from her post.

Ms Winterton was among those Shadow Cabinet ministers who featured in weekend reports claiming Mr Corbyn was planning a reshuffle to oust his critics and those who failed to follow his lead in voting against bombing.

Shadow Defence Secretary Maria Eagle, plus deputy chief whip Alan Campbell and junior whip Conor McGinn were also named as being possibly for the sack in a New Year change-around.

But as Ms Winterton delivered her usual whips’ report in the Commons meeting of the PLP on Monday night, she was given the backing of colleagues.

Gavin Shuker MP, who voted against the bombing, said it should have been whipped but as it wasn’t he wondered if the ‘free vote’ had been genuinely a free vote.

Those present told HuffPost UK that Mr Shuker said that there should be ‘no political punishments’ for those who had voted differently from the party leadership on the issue.

And he also raised the way three different newspapers - the Sunday Telegraph, Observer and Sunday Times - had reported on Sunday claims of a ‘revenge reshuffle’ being floated by Mr Corbyn’s allies.

Labour deputy leader Tom Watson joked that three newspapers could all be wrong at the same time, but Ms Winterton told Mr Shuker and the wider meeting: “I can be clear that it was a free vote and that there should be no political consequences”.

Allies said that Ms Winterton abstained on the Syria vote, not because she wasn’t supportive of the leadership but because that’s the usual practice of a Chief Whip or Shadow Chief Whip on a free vote or vote on a matter of conscience.

Asked after the meeting if the issue of the reshuffle was raised, a spokesman for the Labour leader said it wasn’t, but Mr Shuker later confirmed that he had raised the subject. While some present claimed that Mr Shuker explicitly referred to a 'reshuffle', others felt he had effectively referred to the threatened sackings without being explicit.

The leader’s office, as with the Government, refuse to comment on reshuffle speculation.

Asked if Ms Winterton had been given a rousing reception, the Labour spokesman said: ""There were lots of rousing receptions. It was a very positive meeting".

rosie winterton

The meeting lacked the heated clashes of recent weeks, as it heard from Labour EU 'In' campaign chief Alan Johnson that he'd 'bet' that the Government held its referendum in June or July 2016.

Labour backbench veteran Stephen Pound claimed afterwards that it was "sweetness and light!" "The spirit of Christmas is to be found everywhere," he said.

The meeting began with a loud cheer for newly elected Oldham West and Royton MP Jim McMahon.

It was claimed today that Mr Corbyn’s reshuffle would be a ‘sexist purge’ if it mean the axeing of Ms Eagle and her sister Angela, the Shadow Business Secretary, as well as Ms Winterton.

“They are bullying women, the way they are behaving is appalling. They are a macho bunch and it feels fundamentally sexist,” one source told the Daily Telegraph.

The Labour leader’s team felt he was significantly strengthened by the Oldham West by-election result, as well as the majority support among MPs and the Shadow Cabinet for his stance opposing airstrikes in Syria.

Some of Mr Corbyn’s allies want him to build on his support among the wider party membership – where he was elected by 60% of members in September – by getting more left-wing Shadow Cabinet ministers in place and by removing Mr Benn from his Shadow Foreign Secretary post.

However, some of his supporters believe that acting too soon would risk triggering a mass walkout of his frontbench and prefer to wait until after the May local and London elections.

If Sadiq Khan wins in London, and Labour holds onto or makes gains in the local elections, even if it loses ground in Scotland, Corbyn allies will claim he’s continuing to make progress with the voters.

Ms Winterton is one of several Shadow Cabinet ministers who swiftly decided after Mr Corbyn's election to agree to remain in post.

Yet there is speculation among some at Westminster that she could be replaced by Corbyn ally Jon Trickett.

MPs did not raise at the PLP the issue of Mr Corbyn's decision to attend the Stop the War Christmas fundraiser this Friday.

Man Threatened To Bomb Tory MP Charlotte Leslie's House After Syria Vote

A man threatened to bomb an MP’s house and “show her what it's like to murder innocents” after she voted in favour of Syria air strikes.

Craig Wallace, 23, launched a tirade of abuse on Facebook aimed at Tory MP Charlotte Leslie, who represents Bristol North West, the Press Association reported.

In one post he said: “I'm going to smash her windows then drop a bomb on her house while she's tucked up in bed. You dirty fucking pig-shagging slut.

In a second post, published on December 3, the day after the Commons vote on the issue of UK military intervention in Syria, he said: “I'm going to find her and show her what it's like to murder innocents. You dirty pig-fucking whore.”

The abusive messages were aimed at Tory MP Charlotte Leslie

Wallace, who calls himself Muhammad Mujahid Islam on Facebook, has a string of convictions for violent offences including possession of a knife.

He converted to Islam while in prison serving a sentence of almost five years for attempted robbery.

Three weeks after he was released he posted the messages on a thread of comments on the UK Truth Movement Facebook page.

Wallace, of Willesden Green, north London, pleaded guilty to sending threatening communications at Hendon Magistrates' Court. He was remanded in custody and will be sentenced on December 30.

The comments came to light when Leslie’s father saw them online and reported them to police.

Wallace claimed he was “venting his anger” and had not had any sleep because he had been “protesting for two or three days”.

District Judge Mark Jabbitt said: "What's absolutely clear is that your language and expressions about this MP Ms Leslie, who you have no knowledge of, went beyond any sort of legitimate comment or protest on an extremely serious issue.

"What you did was personalised it and used really the most vile, insulting and threatening language imaginable on a forum."

He ordered a full risk assessment report on Wallace and expressed concern that he was not being formally supervised after his release from prison.

Abu Sayeed, defending, said Wallace has mental health issues and had not been taking his anti-psychotic medication.

"He has co-operated fully with the police and expressed remorse and regret," he added.

"He made the comments to vent his anger.

"Mr Wallace is a Muslim convert, he converted while serving his last sentence. He feels very passionately about the bombing in Syria and the vote recently taken in Parliament.

"He had been out with other protesters and was protesting for two or three days and not had much sleep and hadn't taken his medication."

Wallace has never met Leslie and thought the page was a "closed group", Mr Sayeed said.

A number of MPs were sent threatening messages and abuse after voting in favour of intervention in Syria.

Labour MP Neil Coyle was sent a tweet containing knife emojis, while Simon Danczuk and Stella Creasy also said that they received abusive messages.

These Laws Against Women Seem Ancient And Insane, But Many Still Exist Today

None Of The Seven Foiled UK Terror Plots Was Directed From Syria, Senior MPs Claim

None of the seven terror plots foiled in the UK over the past year was directed from Syria, senior MPs have been told by security and intelligence sources.

Despite David Cameron’s claim that the plots were ‘linked to’ or ‘inspired by’ ISIL, MPs have ascertained there is no evidence that any of them were actually coordinated by the Islamists’ command and control centre in Raqqa.

The admission is a serious challenge to the case for RAF bombing in Syria as it counters the hints from some Tory – and Labour - MPs that ISIL in Syria had to be targeted with airstrikes because it poses a ‘direct’ threat to the UK.

HuffPost UK has been told that in the run up to the Syria vote in the Commons, senior Shadow Cabinet ministers and senior MPs in other parties asked detailed questions about the nature of the threat posed by ISIL.

When pressed, senior intelligence officials representing the Joint Intelligence Committee (JIC) said that the seven foiled British terror plots over the past 12 months were either ‘lone wolf’ types, from individuals radicalised or ‘inspired by’ Islamist propaganda, or ‘linked’ to ISIL in other ways.

MP were further briefed that there was some suggestion that the Paris attacks may have been directed from Syria, although the intelligence was far from firm.

But there was no evidence of any of the potential UK attacks being directed in a similar way, even though the nature of the threat could change at some point in the future.

Some MPs were persuaded to vote for bombing in Syria after being briefed confidentially by the PM’s National Security Adviser Sir Mark Lyall Grant and other officials.

Hilary Benn, the Shadow Foreign Secretary who made a much-praised speech during the Commons debate, said beforehand that there was now a “strong case” for the UK “playing our full part” because “the threat to the UK, to our citizens, from Isil-Daesh is very real”.

Yet other MPs believe that the Prime Minister exaggerated the cause of the seven foiled terror plots and that it was as much 'spin' as his now infamous claims of 70,000 'moderate' ground troops in Syria ready to work with the West.

In his first Syria statement to Parliament on Thursday November 26, Mr Cameron declared: “In the last 12 months, our police and security services have disrupted no fewer than seven terrorist plots to attack the UK, every one of which was either linked to ISIL or inspired by its propaganda.

“So I am in no doubt that it is in our national interest for action to be taken to stop it—and stopping it means taking action in Syria, because Raqqa is its headquarters.”

Yet senior Westminster sources said that Alex Salmond, former SNP leader and still a Privy Councillor, captured accurately the summary of UK briefings to MPs when he appeared on Radio 5 Live’s ‘Pienaar’s Politics’ on Sunday.

Mr Salmond said: “Every one of the seven foiled plots - and let’s compliment our security services in keeping us safe -not one of them was directed from Raqqa.

“And you will find that admission, although not fronted up, in the Prime Minister’s own statements. They’ve either been inspired by - that is lone wolf stabbers or shootists who are caught up in the worldwide rhetoric of Daesh and decide to do something on their own, and perhaps the incident in the Tube station in London last night was an example of that - or ‘connected to’.

“And ‘connected to’ is like the shooting in California, where the perpetrator says I’m a supporter of Daesh and Daesh of course immediately claims responsibility because they will claim responsibility for everything.”

The former First Minister of Scotland went on: “I’m saying what is fact: not one of the seven foiled plots was directed from Syria. If you look at the Prime Minister and examine his own record you know that.

“That doesn’t mean to say there couldn’t be future directed plots. But it does mean that the vast majority of the danger we face are plots which are either inspired by or connected to [ISIL].”

Mr Salmond added that it was a huge leap from the intelligence to backing bombing in Syria.

“You have to judge whether or not your actions in terms of what you’re doing actually makes that danger more likely, as opposed to foiling a directed plot,” he said.

“And then you have to judge whether or not it is possible to bomb in a deeply congested urban area like Raqqa without the inevitable civilian casualties.”

Several Labour MPs, including Jeremy Corbyn and John McDonnell, have also been briefed on the threat posed by ISIL and have concluded that the risk of civilian casualties and of reprisals from terrorists were too great to justify bombing.

Downing Street today slapped down Boris Johnson after he also suggested that the 70,000 ground troops claim had been exaggerated.

The PM's official spokeswoman said that the claim, like others in the PM's statement, had been cleared by the Joint Intelligence Committee.

Thousands Of Euro Notes Found In River Danube And Police Are Baffled

Police have been left baffled after bank notes totalling around €100,000 (£72,000) were found floating in a river.

Officers were first called to the banks of the Danube in Vienna when bystanders saw an unnamed boy jump into the river.

Thinking he was trying to commit suicide, police raced to the scene, only to discover him trying to retrieve the sodden bank notes, the BBC reported.

Investigators are now stumped as to where the money came from.

According to Sky News, they have reportedly ruled out money-laundering or any other source of criminal activity.

Images from Vienna Police showed the notes drying out on a clothes horse.

It was initially thought that the money - a selection of €100 and €500 notes - was counterfeit but it now appears to be genuine.

Under Austrian law, anyone who finds money and hands it in is entitled to keep between 5-10% of the stash.

However, if the owner is not found, the boy could claim the full sum as his own.

Benedict Cumberbatch Pens His Letter To Father Christmas (And It's As Perfect As You'd Expect)

The festive season is upon us, and anyone hoping for presents under the tree should have sent their letter to Father Christmas by now - so thank goodness Benedict Cumberbatch has just got his in on time.

The ‘Sherlock’ star has got a lot on his plate at the moment - y’know, the usual stuff like fatherhood, an award-winning BBC drama and new Marvel film - but Benedict has wisely found time to pen his note for Santa.

In the letter, published on Huffington Post UK, Benedict outlines his hopes for this Christmas, and shares his festive wish.

“You are for the children,” he writes. “Children who need some magic in a world where the borders between innocence and responsibility, playful imagination and cold, adult obstacles are continually shrinking.

“This is what I'd like to ask you to help with. A little more time for children to be children. Stretch the moment of magic and playfulness.

“Distract them from the realities of a world gone mad so that they can laugh with their breath rather than sob with their tears. Especially those caring for family members, or suffering illness, hunger or poverty.

“Especially those hiding in buildings as bombs rain down, or being handed shaking with fear or cold into a boat to escape environmental disaster or war. Please help to light up their worlds with a moment of joy and hope.”

Benedict will be back on our TV screens on New Year’s Day, when ‘Sherlock’ returns for the hotly-anticipated special, which will be set in Victorian London.

The cast are set to reunite again in 2016, to film a full fourth season of the hit show.

Why I Hope the Cops Here Are Never Routinely Armed

After watching the video of the police tasering Muhaydin Mire, 29, now accused of the attempted murder of a 56-year-old man he attacked and seriously wounded at Leytonstone Station after shouting "this is for Syria", I suddenly realized something.

After living in London for almost 30 years - a citizen for over 20 of those - I realized something fundamental about my adopted country.

News of what happened at Leytonstone, of course, spread all over the world, so relatives and friends from the States got in touch.

After I assured them that I was okay, they then went on to ask why and how the Met dealt with a potential terror situation - without guns. It was so strange, so incomprehensible, something they could not imagine.

That's because the USA is an armed society. Arms are the equalizer; the avenger; the explainer; the revenge; and your best friend.

America has as many guns as it has people. So we're talking over 300million and counting.
There were over 300 mass shootings this year - and the year isn't even over yet. Each state regulates gun ownership etc. Since the United States is a federal structure, each state is a kind of mini-republic.

They pretty much do what they want. Which is great for many because there are Americans who heartily believe the federal government, Washington, to be a tyranny, even a foreign entity hell-bent on destroying individual liberty.

For Second Amendment zealots the right to bear arms, to own a gun, is an inherent right. And only God can take your gun away.

I asked friends and relatives in Chicago and LA how police forces in their cities would have dealt with Leytonstone. From my hometown, Chicago's south side:

"Ok. If someone shouted 'Syria' and then proceeded violently the CPD (Chicago Police Department) would just shoot. The SWAT team would of taken care of that London dude. No taser. And if you're a passerby whatever, hey, RIP, 'sorry for your loss' and so forth and so on. But boom! Everybody knows that. In your head you're always hitting the deck, getting on that floor as fast as you can. You're rehearsing. You make sure you have a gun so you don't get gunned."

Los Angeles:

"I think the police are afraid to admit they've hired military veterans. Most young veteran men and women under 35 have fought in either Desert Storm, Iraq or Afghanistan. You can't take a kid outta high school anymore and send him to cadet school. Ex-military is ready, willing and able, plus they need jobs. Here in LA, these ex-military have identified blacks and Hispanics as unpatriotic - just short of committing treason. You can't get combat out of an ex-soldier's head. So it's ugly here."

The New York Daily News' daily headlines rebuking pro-gun people - this one for those offering their prayers to the victims of San Bernadino is bravely leading, along with others, an attempt to rein in the National Rifle Association.

These anti -"Gun USA" people are labelling the NRA "terrorists" and as waging a "NRA jihad" against the American people. The Daily News is calling every mass shooter who played a part this year in the American Gun Nightmare a "terrorist". That's whether the outrages were done in the name of Islam, White Power, Black Power, against abortion or 'For No Specific Reason I Just Felt Like It'.

Of course I know that there are guns in the UK and that there are individuals and communities who live under the threat of them every day. But what I'm arguing against is the routine arming of the police - and of ourselves. Because if you own a gun you're more likely to use a gun. If you produce a gun you get answered with one. If everybody is armed, you'll get armed, too. And then the world becomes a battle between you and What's Out There, Who's Out There.

Just ask the family of the British man who knocked on a door in Texas in the early hours of the morning because his car had broken down and he needed help. He was greeted with a barrage of gunfire before he could even open his mouth. The householder was not charged. It was ruled self-defence.

And even if you're an American expat, with family and friends back in the USA, gun violence will eventually touch you, too. Some of my family lost friends at San Bernadino. They were just ordinary people at a Christmas party, a Christmas party in an armed society where you can buy an automatic weapon faster than you can buy a dart for your dartboard. Where you can strap your Uzi on your shoulder while you stand in the queue for your Big Mac with extra fries. Because owning a gun is more American than a Big Mac, more American than apple pie. A lot of people don't eat apple pies or Big Macs. But you better believe that they probably have a gun or know someone who has.

Yes, I want the UK to be safe. I want the police to have whatever they need to combat the maniacs out there who've hijacked a religion as a flag of convenience for their malignant psychodrama.

Train us to be more alert, too, to be more vigilant, more aware. But don't routinely arm our police. Don't routinely arm us. I really hope that never happens. Not ever.

How has your life experience made you the leader you are today?
It's hard to narrow down exactly what made me the leader I am today as I feel all of my experiences have cumulatively shaped me. There are a few, however, that do stand out as being significantly influential. One of the most significant experiences was playing collegiate softball. Those years of hard work and teamwork taught me a lot about leadership and discipline. I also learned how to win and lose with dignity and how to come back from defeat. The opportunity to live and work abroad was also quite influential. I discovered how to adapt, how to question the status quo and how to embrace cultural diversity. Experiences can teach you lessons at any point in your life. The key is to never stop learning.

How has your previous employment experience aided your position at Randstad?
I previously worked in the manufacturing industry and came to Randstad in 2013. Serving in so many different finance functions, including previous CFO posts, helped make the transition to an HR services organization quite easy. Despite each company's nuances, the fundamentals are the same. I also have the benefit of international work experience. Since Randstad is a global company, this aided in my adaptation to the Randstad culture and gave me great perspective.

What have the highlights and challenges been during your tenure at Randstad?
Over the last few years, Randstad has done a significant amount of work toward integrating cultures, systems and processes across multiple operating companies and regional locations. That in itself was challenging, but we couldn't do it in a bubble. We needed to balance our focus on internal initiatives with the priority of serving our customers and candidates. It was something we had to consider in every decision we made. At the same time, the subsequent improvements that were made and the strengthening of the support processes and partnership for growth have been a highlight.

What advice can you offer women who are seeking a career in your industry?
Take advantage of all available opportunities. If opportunities don't exist, create them. Participate in projects outside your comfort zone. Go the extra mile. Always aim to keep learning. If you know the broad business and have clear goals, including your own career path objectives, you can go far. Take ownership of your goals and have fun. Be visible, be confident and be passionate about what you do.

How do you maintain a work/life balance?
More than 10 years ago, I learned to call this "work/life blend." When I first heard "blend" substituted for "balance," I thought it was a cop-out. After much contemplation, I now know work/life blend is personal. Some need balance--eight hours at work, eight hours at home, eight hours of sleep--but most need a form of blend. What works for you and your family may not be what works for others. I have a work/life blend that works for me and my family. I have an amazing, supportive husband and wonderful children who are the first to point out when our blend gets out of line. It takes a lot of work and compromise to find the right blend and it may change over time, but I believe having your own work/life blend is the foundation for any success, at home or at work.

What do you think is the biggest issue for women in the workplace?
Lack of role models is the biggest issue for women in the workplace. Despite the progress made, we continue to see low levels of women in leadership roles and we need to address the root causes in order to make dramatic, sustainable change. Last week, my 10 year-old daughter chose the glass ceiling as the topic of her school project focused on inequity in the world. When I asked her why, she said, "because I want to work one day." That reinforced my belief that more visible role models are needed in the workplace.

How has mentorship made a difference in your professional and personal life?
Although I never had an official mentor, mentorship has certainly made a difference for me. I have always made a point to learn from everyone I encounter, in both my personal and professional life. I find the best learning opportunities are from those who teach through their actions. This style tends to be the most influential for me, and provides examples that I can either emulate--or not!

Which other female leaders do you admire and why?
I tend to most admire female leaders who overcame some type of adversity, took a stand and made a difference. My own grandmother is someone whose story and experience I greatly respect. After her husband died, she went to work as an executive assistant and raised five children as a single parent. She learned to use a computer at the age of 60 and fought her company's mandatory retirement policy--and won! Strong women like this are all around us, from my mother, to my amazing female colleagues and friends and to those in the news who have stood up for equality. These are all great people we can learn from. A favorite quote of mine is from a passionate female leader, Eleanor Roosevelt. She said: "No one can make you feel inferior without your consent."

What do you want Randstad to accomplish in the next year?
I look forward to doing what I can to make sure Randstad outperforms the market on all fronts: attracting and retaining talent, growth and profitability. I also want to continue the great work we do in our communities. I'd like to increase the positive impact we make and continue to engage our employees.

National Express Deny Claims Muslim Kicked Off Coach Because Passengers Felt 'Uncomfortable'

National Express have categorically denied that a Muslim man was removed from one of its coaches after passengers complained of feeling "uncomfortable".

The company made a statement to the Huffington Post UK after claims that a man had been removed by a coach driver, when a woman on the coach said she didn't want to travel with him.

One witness, Rebekah Makinde, wrote on Twitter that the complaints were made because of the man's religion.

She described how she was "appalled" at the decision, writing it was "unfounded and islamophobic beliefs at the expense of another paying passenger".

Makinde further told the Bristol Post she was told he had been asked to leave because he had too much luggage.

National Express echoed this with its response to the passenger on Twitter:

Passenger Nick McDonald also recalled the incident to the Bristol Post:

"I heard the group of women at the front of the coach say he looked 'shifty'. She got off the coach to make a complaint and the next thing a man wearing a National Express vest got on and asked him to get off.

"If the man was carrying too many bags, why was he allowed to board the coach in the first place? It wasn't until the woman said she felt uncomfortable that he was asked to leave."

However a National Express spokesperson told the Huffington Post UK: "We categorically deny an incident in which a passenger was asked to leave one of our coaches was in any way Islamophobic.

"The gentleman concerned boarded with excess luggage which became an issue for a number of our other customers. He refused to put the excess luggage in the hold when requested, was abusive towards our staff and walked out of the station.

"Our staff, who often have to make difficult decisions at short notice, remained professional throughout and are extremely upset at these serious allegations which are both unfounded and untrue".

The coach company have been receiving numerous complains on Twitter and is continuing to deny any truth into the claims:

The alleged incident occurred on the 10.30am service to London Victoria from Bristol Coach Station on the 3rd of December.

Simply Be Accidentally Put Up A Picture Of Mein Kampf Instead Of A Bra

British fashion retailer SimplyBe.co.uk has come under fire today for advertising a bra with a photo of Hitler's book Mein Kampf.

Twitter user Sylvie Metcalfe stumbled across the bizarre sight when browsing the brand's website, and took to Twitter to point out their very offensive mistake.

You can't make this stuff up.

Simply Be's UK social media team were quick to respond to Metcalfe, and other Twitter users, assuring them that the photo was not deliberately used.

They explained that there was a fault in the site's system, causing it to pull in random images instead of the correct ones listed with the products.

Is that a likely explanation? Or the work of a very disgruntled employee?

That's one reason not to cancel Christmas bonuses, guys.

So What Does This New Domestic Violence Law Really Mean?

Today the Government announced that the law criminalising coercive control and psychological abuse is going to be enforced by the 29th December 2015. Those who are found guilty under the Serious Crime Act 2015 will be liable to a maximum of 5 years in prison, a fine or both. As part of the Domestic Violence Law Reform Campaign we are very pleased to hear this news, but what does the law really mean? And what will the law actually do?

Why do we need it?
Up until now there were gaps in the law that allowed perpetrators of domestic violence to psychologically abuse their victims without criminal consequences. Emotional abuse and coercive control within a relationship, the heart of domestic violence, was not a crime. This permitted perpetrators to continue to abuse and left victims without the sufficient criminal justice safeguards to protect them. Now this gap in the law is filled, we can intervene earlier and hopefully save lives.

What does the law do?
The new law criminalises perpetrators who coerce, control and psychologically abuse their victims. In order for the offence to apply, the behaviour would have to pass two main tests.

Firstly, the perpetrator should know that their actions would lead to another person being controlled. What this means is that if a reasonable person, with all the information available to them, would conclude that the perpetrators actions amount to psychological abuse and coercive control, then the perpetrator should know that their actions would have this effect as well.

Secondly, as a result of the perpetrators actions, there has to be a serious negative influence on the victim's daily life and as a consequence of the perpetrators actions, they suffer alarm, distress or fear for their life.

When does it apply?
The new law applies to behaviours in three environments: an intimate relationship, former partners who still live together and family members. This does not mean that the partners still have to be together in order for it to go to court, it just means that the actions themselves have to have occurred when the victim and perpetrator were personally connected. A controlling incident would have to occur more than once, though a time frame between incidents is not specified in the law.

However, this law is not retroactive. It will only apply to cases that occur after the day it is enforced, previous incidents can be used to build a case, but past abusive relationships do not fall under the Act.

What if the victim and perpetrator were not personally connected at the time of the incidents?
If the victim and the perpetrator were not in an intimate relationship, cohabiting or family members at the time of the incidents then the Stalking and Harassment laws will apply instead.

What it make a difference?
We believe that the change in law will lead to agencies being able to intervene before the violence escalates and will reinforce the view that bruises do not have to be present for an abusive relationship to exist. It is vital that this new law is coupled with good training and increased awareness and understanding of the dynamics of domestic abuse. If so, it will make a real difference to those victims and their children who live in fear.

Attenborough: Is There Still Hope on Climate?

As world leaders gather in Paris to try and limit global warming to 1.5 or 2 degrees, we are left with the question 'Will this actually help or are we actually, very much, totally screwed?'

Through the first week of discussions, there appeared to be little agreement over a number of key points - low lying nations understandably dug in on 1.5 degrees but some larger developing nations threw this out. Debates went on into the night.

The fact remains that, whatever the warming, the consequences are game changing in their tragic scale, and we should know by the end of this week's talks just how bad it could become.

If we get to 2 degrees (a best case scenario for some!) then sea levels rise by over half a meter, 1.5 billion people experience increased water stress, ocean acidification kills off fish and coral and freak weather leads to many more millions of people exposed to flooding and heatwaves. Huge swathes of ecosystems change. The title of Naomi Klein's brilliant climate change book 'This Changes Everything' says it all.

Last week, I was privileged to attend a discussion at the RSA entitled 'Is there still hope on climate?' as Sir David Attenborough interviewed explorer and conservationist Tim Flannery about his new book, 'Atmosphere of Hope' in which Flannery outlines a number of solutions, which collectively still give us grounds to believe we can limit warming even below the 2 degrees.

The solutions are varied and some may seem like science fiction, but then all science was once precisely that. Flannery reminded us that as we look to 2050 for our warming cap, imagine how much could change by then. Compare the world in 1915 to 1950 - we go from a world of empire, a great war fought on horseback and foot to a nuclear world, the advance of communism and the approach of the space race.

Ideas in Flannery's book include using coffee grounds, carbon sucking concrete and vast seaweed farms - a desktop study suggests that if we planted 9% of our oceans with seaweed, it would remove all excess CO2. It would also provide enough protein from fish and crustaceans for ten billion people. Planting so much is hugely impractical but it gives you a scale for how much would need to change to address this. Look at the equivalent it would take on land - you would need to plant an area the size of Australia with trees to draw out just one tenth of the atmospheric CO2.

On the renewables side, patents are being filed to improve provision every day and it is becoming increasingly obvious that a joined up, multi pronged attack is the only way of challenging climate change.

But even if we get consensus next week, there is still a major job to convince businesses and individuals to do all that is required to get there, and that we all have a responsibility and role to play. That may end up being the greatest challenge of all.

Attenborough had the last and most prophetic word - he said that just 1/5000th of the sun's power hitting earth every day could power all human needs. But from a lifetime observing man's interaction with our planet, he said the risk would be that if we secured cheap renewable energy then humanity would continue to devastate earth as it has done. What we need is a major shift in our own humanity.

"It was once perfectly acceptable to the human race to think that one man could own another," he said. "And yet, half a century later slavery was something that was intolerable, that no human could even conceive. There was a huge change in the moral perspective of humanity. And it is my hope that somehow if we go on talking about this, about the evils, then somehow humanity will make another of those philosophical leaps and it will become intolerable, just as slavery became intolerable, that we should misuse the energies and the capacity of this wonderful world."

Women in the City: Changing the Leopard's Spots

I recently gave the keynote speech at the Women in the City Awards Lunch, an amazing event celebrating the incredible achievements of women and men who are working hard to change the face and culture of the city.

However, a large part of my speech focused on the fact that, although we talk a great deal about how to encourage women to 'lean in', we need to look at the bigger picture because otherwise the changes will be minimal. There are four main areas where we have the ability to change the game for all women, so more women can stay in work, reach senior positions and start businesses.

1. What should we really be valuing?

Let's look at some stats: over 55% of women accounted for higher education placements in the UK in 2014. Then, as we enter the workplace and look at the top positions, we see that only 8.6% of women are executive directors in the FTSE 100 with 28.5% taking up non-executive director places. How is this possible?

It is time we start to change the "value structure" like we have done at Halebury: to value output not hours and to formalise how we value management aspects and emotional intelligence. If you are purely valued on the amount of time you put in at your desk and the money you directly generate, which is what law firms continue to value, how can "time-strapped" working mothers climb up the ladder without either never seeing their children or having a breakdown?

2. The new future of work?

The law firm structure, like many corporate structures, was established during a period when men wore bowler hats and at a time when it would be acceptable to fire a women because she was pregnant. We have of course made great strides on women's rights since then.

However, we are in a new world order with many corporate entities working 24/7, and at the same time our logistics have become more complicated, encapsulating everything from childcare issues to commute times. So what does "the future of work", mean for your teams? In my view, working one day a week from home is becoming an expectation. Modern day flexible working should mean the ability to determine when you work and where. Our business model is entirely based on flexible working where 100% of our team work flexibly; whether full days or part days, from home or client sites. Ultimately it is up to the lawyer and the client how they work best and we resource work accordingly. This is the future of work for our team.

3. Supporting working families.

I recently read that statutory maternity pay is less than minimum wage. This, together with the increased cost of childcare and the lack of childcare options, means that many women either have to come back to work earlier than they are ready to do so or they cannot come back at all due to the economics.

I started my legal career at the age of 25. I left paid employment and started Halebury when I was 33 and although it was not generating much revenue, it was a trading business. Like most business owners I paid our employees, but I did not receive much of a salary myself, so I was not eligible to receive statutory maternity pay. Who can afford to take that risk?

I recently saw a Ted Talk by Jessica Shortall. It was a great talk about maternity leave in the US, but it applies to the UK too. Our maternity pay system is out of date and our childcare system is lagging behind. If we want women to stay in work, to reach senior positions, and to start businesses, we need provide full paid leave for women and men without exceptions for length of service, level of income and also for entrepreneurs. We need to support working families during the short period of time they need an intense period of childcare and funding.

4. And finally, how do we inspire the next generation?

When I look back at my days as a junior lawyer, one of the main reasons I left was because I looked around and I saw very few senior women who were married with children and the ones who were faced numerous issues. I know life in the City over the last 10 years has changed, but I think it is hard for women looking to rise up the ranks to see how much some women in leadership have had to sacrifice to achieve their position.

I have absolutely no criticism regarding how other women operate. I start work at 4am every day; there is no judgment. Essentially, if the women at the top have had to sacrifice everything; their house, their time, their savings and their family time to make it to the top, many will not aspire to follow.

However, if their skillsets are valued, they have control over their lives and their outputs are valued on more than just hours, there is a better chance of more women wanting to join the existing leadership. We need role models with sustainable lives that women can aspire to.

We are making great strides, but we need to stop playing around the edges to ensure we have real and sustained change.

Where Will The Jobs Be In 2022?

Everyone gives you advice as a kid, especially on what to be when you grow up.

'Try science, as you're inquisitive.' 'Go into law, because you never seem to lose an argument.'

I'm guessing no one said you'd be great as a purchasing manager or taxation expert. And that's why careers advice needs to be overhauled.

Where the jobs aren't

City & Guilds conducted research to understand this better. We found a huge mismatch between what careers 14-19 years olds want to pursue and where the jobs will actually be.

For example, more than 15% of young people said they want a career in arts, entertainment and presenting. Yet, less than 5% of all jobs will be in this industry by 2022, according to job forecasts.

Additionally, 20% of young people said they want to work in education, but only 10% of jobs will be in this sector.

2015-12-04-1449245688-6375974-GE51.jpg

Where the jobs are

Now look at where the jobs are going to be.

23% of new jobs created by 2022 will be in health and social work, which was popular with young people as well. But if you look closer, most of them want to be medical practitioners, when the demand is far greater for care workers.

These mismatches are not helpful to young people because they create huge competition for a small number of jobs. That's a waste of time, effort and labour, especially when so many employers suffer from skills gaps.

So how do we correct this?

Better advice

It starts with better advice in school. Young people deserve to know where the job opportunities are, and what skills and experience employers are looking for.

68% of young people surveyed want to go to university, even though a third didn't even know what they want to study. There's nothing wrong with university, but only 30% of jobs in 2022 are predicted to require a degree.

2015-12-04-1449245756-7388837-GE12.jpg

That's why careers advice should also include different ways into work, besides university. That way, young people will be able to choose the best path for them.

Employer links

Another key finding from the report is that we need better links between young people and employers.
